Volleyball Goes 0-2 During Tri-Match

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – In a tri-match between Penn State New Kensington, Penn State Shenango, and Kent State Tuscarawas women's volleyball, New Kensington went 0-2 against the opposing teams.

New Kensington took on Shenango in their first matchup at noon. The first two sets displayed New Kensington's aggressive play, even though they didn't come out on top in either. The scores read 25-21 and 25-23. After playing so well, New Kensington wanted the third set, but Shenango won 25-9.

Kaylea Flick (Murrysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional) played as middle hitter throughout the game and led with 11 kills. She also had three block assists, along with teammates Auveonna Perkins (Arnold, Pa./ Valley) and Kierra Rose (Uniontown, Pa./ Uniontown). On defense, Janet Surma (Lower Burrell, Pa./ Burrell) contributed ten digs.

The second matchup, against Kent St., was a series of back and forth play. Kent St. took the first set, 25-15, but New Kensington snagged the second, 25-23. With the sets at 1-1, at least two more had to be played. It ended up being Kent St. who triumphed in the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-19.

Flick and Surma hit down ten and nine kills, respectively. Along with kills, Flick led with 19 digs, four service aces, and five blocks. Lindsey Hessom (Leechburg, Pa./ Kiski Area) pushed the offense forward with 20 assists.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, New Kensington will play Penn State Fayette at 7 p.m.
