Two Eagles Finish In Top Five At W&J Invitational

The KSU Tusc wrestling squad participated in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational with more than a dozen other teams on Saturday. The Golden Eagles earned a third place and a fifth place finish in the meet as they competed as the only non NCAA team.

Devan Welch earned third place in the 286 weight class with a record of 3-1 on the afternoon. Welch lost his first match 3-1 to a wrestler from Lycoming, but stormed back to pin a wrestler from the host team in round two. He then took a 2-1 decision over Eagles teammate, Clay Schafer, and in his final match scored a 9-3 decision over the same Lycoming wrestler who had beaten him in his opening round match.

Schafer started the day with a pin over a Pitt Bradford wrestler and then dropped two straight matches. He first loss came by pin to the eventual champion from Washington & Jefferson and his second to Welch in a battle of practice foes. Schafer bounced back in his fourth match with a pin over a Jamestown Community College wrestler to claim fifth place overall.

Also posting wins on the day were, Mason Contini (184) and Eric Shaw (197) who both finished 2-2 on the day.

On Saturday, November 16, the wrestlers travel to Philippi, WV to take part in the Battler Royale in Rex Pyles Arena at Alderson Broaddus University. Action begins at 10 a.m.
