Eagles Finish Seventh At W&L Invitational In Virginia

The Golden Eagles wrestling team opened the 2020 portion of their season by finishing in seventh place at the Jim Crytzer Memorial Invitational hosted by Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. The 24th ranked hosts won their own tournament and amassed 153.5 points while winning three individual titles.

The Eagles finished with 21.5 points to place ahead of two NCAA D-III schools and one NAIA school in a loaded 10-team field. Two Navy and Gold grapplers won recorded identical 3-2 winning records on the day.

Mason Contini (184 lbs.) won three matches on the day against two losses. He started the day with two pins, winning the first match in 55 seconds and the second at the 2:43 mark. Contini lost by pin in his third match and won by medical forfeit in his fourth bout of the day. In a match for third place he was decisioned 8-5 and finished fourth.

KSU Tusc had two wrestlers compete in the 285 lb. class, with Derek Skeehan earning a 3-2 record on the day. Skeehan lost his first match by pin, but bounced back with two falls of his own and a 5-3 decision before being knocked out of the tournament getting pinned in the next round.

Also competing at 285 was Devan Welch who finished 1-2 with a pin. Tyler Ernst was 1-1 in the 149 lb. division and recorded a 20-5 technical fall. Elliot Dean (133 lbs.), Collin Mancuso (165 lbs.) and Chad Van Pelt (165 lbs.) all finished 0-2 on the day.

On Sunday, January 12th, Kent State Tusc will host the Golden Eagles Duals at Claymont High School. Participating teams are Ancilla College, Henry Ford College, Mercyhurst Northeast, Otterbein University, Rochester College and Wilmington College. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. with wrestling starting at 9:00 a.m. Admission is $5.00 at the door.
