Wrestlers Get Dual Win In Quad, Finish 1-1 On Day

The Kent State Tuscarawas wrestling team hosted a quad meet on Super Bowl Sunday and finished 1-1 on the day. The Golden Eagles beat the University of Toledo 40-6 and lost their final dual match of the day 32-15 against Akron. It was the first time the Zips had beaten KSU Tusc in three seasons.

In the opening match against the Rockets, Elliott Dean (133 lb.), Tyler Ernst (141 lb.) and Collin Mancuso (157 lb.) all won by forfeit to spot the Eagles to an early 18-6 advantage.

Chad Van Pelt provided his second collegiate pin in the 165 lb. match at the 1:39 mark and for a 24-6 lead, and Mason Contini won by forfeit in the 184 lb. bout for a commanding 30-6 margin.

KSU Tusc also picked up wins in the final two matches of the meet, as Derek Skeehan (235 lb.) earned four points for a 10-3 major decision and Devan Welch pinned his Toledo opponent in 2:24 for the winning margin of 40-6.

The final match against the Akron was close until the end. Dean won by forfeit at 133 lb. for a 6-0 lead, before Ernst lost by technical fall to draw the Zips to within 6-5.

Mancuso followed with a 7-1 decision for a 9-5 Golden Eagles lead before Van Pelt was pined and UA took an 11-9 lead. The Zips got a forfeit at the 174 lb. division to lead 17-9, before Contini won by pin to draw the Navy and Gold to within 17-15.

Akron won the match after a forfeit at 197 and Skeehan was decisioned 3-1 in the 235 lb. bout for a 26-15 lead. They also won the final match of the day as Welch was pinned as UA stayed undefeated on the day at 3-0.

For the day, Dean, Mancuso and Contini all finished 2-0, while Ernst, Van Pelt, Skeehan and Welch were all 1-1.

The Zips finished unbeaten (3-0) followed by the Golden Eagles who were 1-1, Toledo 1-2, and Ohio Valley University was 0-2.

Next up for Eagles is a trip to the USCAA National Championships at Penn State Fayette, in Uniontown, PA on Sunday, February 16th. Wrestling begins at 11 a.m.
