Golden Eagles Finish Fifth As Six Wrestlers Qualify For National Tournament

The Kent State Tuscarawas wrestling team finished fifth of 13 teams in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Great Lakes Regional tournament in Flint, MI on Saturday, while six Golden Eagles grapplers qualified for the NCWA National Championships by finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes.

The Navy and Gold amassed 71 points to finish just ahead of the Iowa State University Wrestling Club (70.5), but behind the team champion, University of Akron (110), Grand Valley State University (109), Mott Community College (95.5) and The Ohio State University Wrestling Club (86.5).

Freshman Derek Skeehan, from Reynolds High School in Greenville, PA, was crowned individual champion in the 235 lb. division and was the top Golden Eagles placer on the afternoon.

Dover High Alum Mason Contini was second in the 184 lb. class, while Collin Mancuso from Milan Edison HS (OH) was third at 157 lbs., Elliott Dean from Bridgeport HS (OH) and Devan Welch a Mentor HS (OH) graduate were both fourth in the 133 lb. and 285 lb. classes respectively. Chad Van Pelt, from Painesville Riverside (165 lb.) was awarded a wild card entry into the national tournament with a sixth-place finish.

The Golden Eagles will now ready themselves for the NCWA National Championships in Allen, TX just outside of Dallas. The tournament will be held on March 12-14.
