Baseball Drops Season Opening Doubleheader

Baseball Drops Season Opening Doubleheader

The Golden Eagles baseball team hit the road to Celina, Ohio on Saturday and dropped a season opening double header to Wright State Lake 12-6 and 10-0.

After a scoreless first inning in the opener, the homestanding Lakers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning as they rocked the Eagles with four singles and a double.

KSU Tusc added a single run in the top of the third frame when Mason Eicher led off with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice. They plated two more in the fifth after Eicher reached base on a fielder's choice, Charlie Drumm drew a free pass and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Then, Owen Poland ripped a line drive single to centerfield that scored Eicher and Drumm and the Eagles trailed 7-3.

WSUL added a run in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 8-3, before the Golden Eagles responded with some two-out lightning and three runs in the top half of the sixth inning.

Tyler Randles was hit by a pitch and Kyle Stotzer singled to right field to put runners at first and second. Eicher smacked a grounder to short and reached safely on an error to load the bases. Randles scored on an error by the first baseman as Stotzer moved to third.

Drumm ripped a double to centerfield that scored both Stotzer and Eicher and the Golden Eagles were back in business trailing 8-6.

In the bottom of the sixth however, the Lakers scored on the strength of a three-run homer and a double, before retiring the Eagles in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the 12-6 victory.

Bret Clements was 3/4 at the plate and had three of seven hits for the Eagles, while Drumm was 1/3 with a double and three RBIs. Eicher tripled and scored three runs and Poland added two RBIs.

The second game of the double header was won by the Lakers 10-0 on 12 hits, as the Eagles could only muster two hits and left five runners on base.
